About thirty years ago, the personal computer was considered almost a devil from the future, sent to enslave us, modern folk. Today, it has become almost a relic of the past, making way for the spotlight on "fancy" gadgets.
The same goes for free WiFi: in the past, it was like looking for a needle in a haystack, but today you can connect to it almost anywhere, even freely wandering the streets in many European and American countries. Along with the rise of free WiFi, what else can we expect in the near future?
Nursing Homes
Surprisingly, many still believe that nursing homes are akin to American concentration camps where the sick and elderly are exiled. For some reason, post-Soviet residents are hesitant to acknowledge that specialized care facilities offer living conditions and elderly care far superior to regular apartments. Skilled staff is always on hand, and social interaction is abundant. When will we realize that entrusting a family member to a nursing home does not mean abandoning them forever?
Shared Bicycles
How do you park your bicycle? Do you triple-check the lock's reliability and keep an eye on it every chance you get? Well, overseas, they have not worried about this for about a decade now! Special bike stations allow anyone to borrow a "two-wheeled friend" for a while, either for a nominal fee or even for free. For instance, in Paris, there are designated stations with payment terminals where you can not only purchase a rental card but also use the internet—to check the bike availability at a specific rental point, for example.
Ant Colony Library
Alternatively called a megabook repository or literary Rubik's cube, the municipal library in the German city of Stuttgart is something out of the ordinary, spanning over 20,000 square meters. The first thing that strikes is its unique architecture: with a total of eleven floors, two of which are underground.
The internal layout is equally intriguing: featuring a central reading room surrounded by storage floors holding thousands of books categorized by themes.
For Comics Enthusiasts
It's odd how this genre of literature doesn't enjoy much popularity with us. Yet in the US and Spain, it's the opposite: while our children are painstakingly introduced to classical literature, foreign teenagers joyfully read comics. It's easy to follow along with pictures! In Spain, they even established a special shopping center housing the best comics from domestic and international authors.
"Innovative" Police
Who said law enforcement officers must exclusively patrol in cars with flashing lights? British police vehemently disagree. They readily switch from "Mercedes" to bicycles and Segways, swapping uncomfortable shoes for speed skates. Rumor has it skateboards are next in line.
