Historical Facts:
- The first patent for omni-wheels was issued in 1919. They are used in robotics, toys, and wheelchairs for disabled individuals.
- In 2009, Honda was granted a patent for a vehicle with omni-wheels. However, due to its specific design feature (construction built around the wheel), these vehicles did not gain widespread use.
Features of Liddiard Wheels:
William Liddiard fitted the wheels onto a Toyota Echo but claims that similar wheels can be made for any vehicle, including heavy-duty machines with large dimensions. The main current issue lies in the cost of the wheel, as the average price per unit amounts to $1500. The price may vary depending on the wheel size and type of vehicle.
The wheel utilizes an electric motor for movement, powered by the car's battery. The traction speed of the wheel is approximately 2 km/h regardless of the direction. Additionally, the developer claims that due to its unique design – the tire maintains constant contact with 1/3 of the total area with the road – the tire's lifespan will be longer than that of regular tires. This allows for less frequent tire changes and more efficient resource utilization.
