Coworking was not conceived as a business venture by California programmer Brad Neuberg in 2005. His brainchild, initially named "The Hat Factory" and based in San Francisco, aimed to blend the perks of a "free-spirited artist" with the structure of office work, while also offering freelancers the chance to do the same.
