Explosive Puzzles – Explosive Success
A real man must plant a tree, build a house, and answer the question: "How many levels of Angry Birds has his son managed to pass?"
Ironclad evidence that "genius is simple" - the military-field puzzle Angry Birds by Rovio. No one could resist the passions unfolding in the battle between birds and pigs, except perhaps for a solitary seashell in the Seychelles Islands. Boys, girls, young men, young women, grandmas, and grandpas all play it, nearly the same way: "Let the whole world wait." The secret of this bird mania? Still unknown.
On Popularity and Revenues
The game's popularity exceeded even the boldest expectations (if there were any). Launched at the end of 2009, within just over 2 months, it surpassed 2 million downloads. A year later, it set a new record - 50 million downloads. For those dreaming of a successful startup, imagine the potential - with the initial cost at $0.99 and 50,000,000 downloads, envision the earnings.
In 2011, downloads continued to soar, surpassing 500 million by the year-end. By May 2012, downloads crossed a billion mark. Rovio revealed that the Angry Birds series had over 1.7 billion downloads in a financial report.
Success Prehistory
Prior to Angry Birds, Rovio Mobile had experience creating 51 games over 4 years. If their 52nd game had not been Angry Birds but something else, their fate might have been different. Luckily, Angry Birds turned everything around for the three Finnish lads.
Plot Development
Why birds and pigs in the game? By sheer chance. Rovio's chief designer, Jaakko Iisalo, loved drawing birds since childhood. And why pigs as enemies? "Why not," thought the Rovio team, and it worked. The natural conflict added fun to the game.
On the Path to Success
Originally developed for iOS, Angry Birds launched on the App Store in December 2009. It later expanded to Android, Nokia Ovi, PlayStation 3, and Google Chrome browser.
According to Peter Vesterbacka, Rovio's developers didn't spend a penny on Angry Birds' advertising – "a furious bird doesn't need promotion." The game's iconic melody and remixes added to its popularity.
Expansion of "Angry Birds"
The first version had one episode with 3 chapters and 21 levels each. It has expanded to nearly a thousand levels today. Various additions like monkeys, a parrot from "Rio," and space-themed versions like Angry Birds Star Wars and Space followed its initial success.
September 2012 saw the release of Bad Piggies, letting players defend the once-vilified pigs against the birds.
Monetization of the Brand
Rovio capitalized on the brand by licensing plush toys, merchandise, and even an animation studio. The Angry Birds Movie premiered in 2016, with promises of a sequel.
A Finnish Angry Birds-themed amusement park opened in 2012. Rovio plans to expand to EU countries.
