All About Raising Pheasants in America

Pheasants are unique and relatively expensive birds known for their vibrant colors and graceful appearance. These birds are domesticated, making them easy to breed in home settings.

Pheasants are considered valuable birds due to their multiple uses:

  1. Hunting: Hunting is increasingly popular, with pheasant meat being sought after for its juiciness and excellent taste. Adult birds are often purchased by hunting estates, generating an average income of $10-15 per bird.
  2. Selling Pheasant Meat: Restaurants value pheasant meat as a delicacy, with a kilogram costing around $10. Custom orders are also common.
  3. Selling to Collectors: Decorative pheasant species are bred for collectors who are willing to pay top dollar. The price of a collector's pheasant can reach $500.
  4. Selling to Other Farmers: Breeding pheasants for sale to farmers looking to start a new business is another viable option.
  5. Feather Sales: Pheasant feathers are valuable for decorations and taxidermy purposes.
  6. Farm Tours: Organizing tours to a pheasant farm can attract visitors, especially children, due to the birds' beauty.

Utilize social media for successful pheasant sales by opening a pheasant store on a site like "Facebook." It requires minimal investment and advertisement can be done by inviting friends. The advantage of using a social platform is the ability to showcase farm and bird photos and provide detailed information on pricing and pheasants in dedicated sections.

Where to Raise Pheasants?

A pheasant farm should have two areas: a pen for adult birds and an incubator for eggs. Birds should be raised outdoors, with a minimum space requirement of 2x2 meters per bird. For newborn chicks or smaller birds, the pen area can be adjusted accordingly.

When building the pen, consider that pheasants can fly, so a grille roof should be installed above. The preferred size of the grille cells should be 2x2 cm, but smaller sizes are permissible.

An egg incubator can be self-made or purchased from specialized manufacturers. Specific features of a pheasant incubator include:

  • Air temperature set at 37.80°C, though eggs should be left at room temperature for 5 hours before incubation;
  • Humidity should be maintained at 65%;
  • Special doors to be partly opened starting from the third week for egg cooling;
  • Temperature control system for adjustment, as temperature needs to decrease after 3 weeks;
  • Easy egg rotation to prevent embryo sticking to the shell.

Eggs should be turned at least 5 times a day to ensure proper development and avoid embryo issues.

Female pheasants lay eggs every other day. Eggs should be collected promptly to prevent damage by other birds and encourage more laying from the female.

Feeding Guidelines

Feeding pheasants varies with the seasons and breeding purposes. These birds are voracious eaters and consume insects, spiders, agricultural crops like wheat, and small reptiles.

  • During fall and winter, a pheasant consumes about 75g of feed daily, increasing to 105g in spring and summer;
  • The diet must be rich in protein, calcium, and phosphorus, available through insects or animals. Ready-made bird feed can ensure proper nutrition.

Consider growing wheat to save on feed costs or create an additional income stream from selling wheat.
