he Story of BIC: From a Small Factory to a Global Brand

We've all had a BIC ballpoint pen in our hands at least once in our lives, and maybe countless times. The familiar BIC logo is a common sight in stores worldwide, where you can find not only pens but also lighters, razors, and various everyday items from this well-known brand. Many people mistakenly credit the invention of the ballpoint pen to the founder of BIC.

In truth, Marcel Bich, the founder, was not directly involved in inventing the ballpoint pen. The patent for the pen actually belonged to Hungarian brothers, Georg and Laszlo Biro, in the 1940s. However, Marcel played a vital role in spreading the use of this innovative writing tool. About a decade after its invention, Marcel acquired all rights to the patent.

ven without Marcel Bich, the ballpoint pen would likely have gained global popularity due to its practicality and simplicity. However, Marcel deserves credit for giving the pen its recognizable appearance and for seizing the opportunity at the right moment.

The Early Years of the Company

Marcel Bich established his company, Societe PPA, shortly after World War II ended in 1945. He bought a small stationery factory near Paris and started developing a new type of pen. Within four years, thanks to obtaining the Biro brothers' patent, he succeeded.

The BIC Cristal ballpoint pen, introduced in 1950, became an iconic symbol of its era. It boasted a simple yet appealing design, was user-friendly, top-quality, and affordable for everyone. Within a few years, the BIC Cristal pen was distributed in nearly every European country, prompting Marcel Bich to rename the company Societe BIC for better recognition.

To sustain its rapid expansion, Societe BIC broadened into new markets by acquiring pen manufacturers in other countries. Soon, renowned companies like Waterman Pen (USA) and Biro-Swan (UK) became part of Societe BIC.

However, Marcel Bich chose not to rest on his laurels. In 1973, he acquired the well-known French lighter manufacturer, Flaminaire. That same year, BIC introduced the world's first BIC lighter. Two years later, they launched BIC razors, followed by colored pencil production in 1979.

All BIC products share a common thread: accessibility and quality for all. Designed for reuse, products like refillable pens, interchangeable razor blades, and refillable lighters are affordable, making replacements easy for consumers.

Present Day Innovations

In recent years, Societe BIC ventured into new territories such as perfumes and even mobile phones. While the perfume venture was short-lived and discontinued four years after its launch, the budget mobile phones were a hit. Priced at 30 euros with 12 euros in credit, these phones became popular in airports, offering travelers an economical means to make essential calls upon arriving at a new destination.

Today, BIC remains a prominent producer of pens, razors, lighters, and other affordable essentials. Share the captivating history of this iconic company with your friends on social media!
