Today, yogurt is considered a symbol of healthy eating. Millions of people worldwide consume this product daily. It's hard to believe that not long ago, almost no one knew about it. Thanks to the efforts of one company, yogurt has become globally recognized and incredibly popular.

The Origins

The history of Danone can be traced back to the Pasteur Institute in France. It was there in 1908 that the renowned Russian microbiologist, Ilya Mechnikov, conducted research on the health benefits of a specific dairy product containing yogurt cultures. Mechnikov's studies on the inhabitants of Bulgaria and the impact of this product on their health led to the recognition of the beneficial properties of yogurt. He even received a Nobel Prize for his work. However, it took the entrepreneurial spirit of one individual to bring these scientific findings out of university walls.

Isaac Carasso and the Founding of Danone

That person was the founder of the globally renowned brand. Born into a Greek-Jewish family, Isaac Carasso had been familiar with the beneficial properties of local dairy products since childhood, which were sold in glass jars on the streets. After receiving a medical education, Carasso actively participated in the country's political affairs and had close ties to the Young Turks leaders. Due to political upheavals, he had to flee to Spain during the First Balkan War, changing his surname along the way.

The move to Barcelona turned out to be a fortunate opportunity for Isaac. There, he encountered Mechnikov's works and decided to introduce his familiar product to the European market. In 1919, he founded the company Danone. The name was not arbitrary; it was a term of endearment derived from his son Daniel's name. Initially marketed as a medicinal product through pharmacy chains, yogurt quickly gained immense popularity in Europe during a time when Eastern remedies were in vogue.

Daniel Carasso – Continuing the Legacy

In the 1930s, Isaac's son, Daniel, took over the company. By that time, yogurt had transitioned from being solely a medicinal remedy to a popular food product. Daniel relocated Danone's production and headquarters to Paris, closer to Mechnikov's laboratory, where the Bulgarian culture was sourced.

Fearing persecution due to his Jewish heritage during World War II, Daniel moved all production to the US and rebranded the company as Dannon Milk Products Inc. Within seven years, he successfully popularized yogurt in the American market. By 1951, the company returned to Paris, having sold its American division.

In 1953, Danone introduced a groundbreaking product to the market – fruit-flavored yogurt. This innovation revolutionized the industry and helped Danone surpass its main competitors.

The Era of Mergers

Until 1967, Danone focused solely on yogurt production. The brand’s expansion began with a merger with the French cheese giant, Gervais. In 1973, a significant merger with the glass company BSN, led by Antoine Riboud, transformed Danone into one of the largest corporations. BSN, already a leader in glass production, owned renowned brands like Societe des Eaux d'Evian and Kronnenbourg.

Expansion and Optimization

During the 1980s and 1990s, Danone divested from less profitable areas like construction and refocused on food production. The company brought its American division back and acquired Generale Biscuit. By the late 1990s, Danone’s operations encompassed various sectors such as water, yogurt, beer, champagne, cakes, and cookies. Not all ventures were profitable, leading to closures or sales. An example of this strategy was the sale of the cookie division in 2007 and the acquisition of Royal Numico, a firm specializing in children's and health nutrition.

Today, Danone is a colossal corporation known for producing healthy dairy products, food, water, and baby food. Its annual revenue ranges between $1.6-2 billion, with products sold under many well-known brands like Danissimo, Evian, Activia, and Raumplus.
