Currently, more and more people prefer active leisure activities, whether it's hiking in warm weather or skiing in winter, and many other sports and outdoor pursuits. However, all these activities require special gear and equipment. Not everyone can afford to buy them, and finding extra storage space at home can be quite challenging.
For instance, there are items used only in summer and others exclusively in winter. However, you need to store them all year round. Those who live in their own houses are lucky as they probably have some storage space like a garage or basement. But what about apartment dwellers, especially renters? Where can they keep all their gear?
Our overseas neighbors have found a solution to this situation. They've created a new service that allows people to become members of a travel enthusiasts' club by subscribing. An annual subscription, which provides access to all basic hiking gear, costs around $100 for club members.
This approach significantly saves money while offering quality equipment that would otherwise be expensive to purchase and used only a few times a year. Reservation of necessary gear should be made at least 48 hours before the planned trip, with a usage period of one week. If you need more time or extra equipment, you can simply pay an additional amount set by the service administration.
In our country, offering gear rental services seems to be a viable and in-demand business idea, especially considering the differences in mentality. Active leisure is mostly popular among students and young people who often have to rent accommodation. Due to budget constraints, they usually live in small spaces shared with neighbors, leaving them with no storage options. Hence, the idea of renting outdoor gear appears realistic and sought after here as well.
Importantly, this isn't a seasonal business as it may seem initially. The success of your venture throughout the year depends mainly on your inventory and location. For example, in warmer months, items like bicycles, inflatable boats, fishing gear, foldable tables and chairs, air mattresses, life jackets, backpacks, sleeping bags, and tents will be in demand. Come winter, you can switch to skis, ice skates, sleds, snowboards, special footwear, thermals, and jackets.
When selecting gear, besides weather conditions, you should also consider the location of your rental point. Not every city may sustain such a business profitably. Therefore, setting up rental points in resort and tourist areas where such services are always in demand is more advisable. In summer, place your point near the beach with high tourist traffic. If focusing on bicycles and rollerblades, opt for locations near shopping centers and parks. In winter, move closer to ski resorts and ice rinks, adjusting your rental inventory accordingly.
The estimated startup costs for this business are around $4,000, the minimum needed to set up a small rental facility with essential equipment. You would require approximately 300 square feet to store all the gear. Regarding rental prices, consider the initial cost of the gear and its lifespan. If the item is affordable and wears out quickly, the rental fee should be around a tenth of its value.
Moreover, don't overlook the option of online rentals through social media or creating your website. You can even store your inventory at home or in a garage, which is especially relevant for those with limited funds to rent a separate space. This concept is more likely to succeed in larger cities with a substantial population, where word-of-mouth advertising from regular clients can promote your service effectively.
When your business gains momentum, consider expanding by opening a store with a similar range of equipment. The rental service market for tourists is relatively untapped, offering room for growth. Seize the opportunity while it's hot, as tomorrow, someone else might fill the vacant spot in the business landscape in your city.
