Elon Musk's Younger Brother Embarks on Urban Farming

The Project's Essence

Kimbal Musk positions his idea as an accelerator for young entrepreneurs interested in urban farming development. Over 100 vertical plots, covering 19 sq. ft., will be housed in shipping containers on the former Pfizer plant site. These containers will be utilized to grow vegetables and salads using ZipGrow and FreightFarms technologies. Young entrepreneurs will receive training in hydroponic farming and building successful businesses based on them. The goal is to establish several similar accelerators in various regions across the U.S. in the future.

Advantages of Urban Farming of This Kind

1) Higher Productivity. The yield from one of these containers is roughly equivalent to the harvest from 80 acres of conventional farmland.

2) Efficient Resource Usage. The water and fertilizer required for producing one unit of produce are reduced by 80%. This reduction is particularly critical amid the ongoing population growth and the potential global water shortage.

3) Ability to Grow Fresh Vegetables and Greens Within City Limits. Experts believe this will significantly strengthen the bond between food producers and urban dwellers.

Despite the undeniable benefits, there are still many skeptics of the idea. For instance, TakePart cites a 2015 study claiming that these farms consume significantly more electricity than traditional vegetable cultivation methods. Additionally, experts doubt whether such a large-scale and long-term project will attract many investors in this era of fast-paced startups and market-disrupting innovations.

Nevertheless, despite the skepticism, the project appears potentially profitable and capable of reshaping our perception of agriculture in the near future.
