One of the best ways to make decent money is to start selling a product that fulfills a constant need among the population. And one type of such product is fasteners, materials without which no construction or repair can be done. Let's not waste your time explaining how nails, screws, bolts, anchors, and the like are in demand among consumers - even a child can understand that. If you are attracted to the idea of a business based on selling such products, then you should equip yourself with the advice from this article and get started.

Nail Production Business Idea

The first thing to do before starting a production business is to conduct market research locally. Nail and fastener production is a highly competitive field. If you live in a large urban area, this niche is likely already crowded with competitors. To make good profits, you will need to sell large volumes of products. So, first and foremost, make sure there is sufficient demand for your products.

Assuming you find that you have few competitors and can start implementing the business idea, then move on to the next phase: deciding on the initial scale of production. This decision will determine the space needed to start production, the equipment to purchase, the number of employees to hire, and more. It's best to make this decision based on the risk level you can afford rather than solely on your starting capital. If there are few competitors in the market and prospects for large-scale sales, you can consider taking a loan or attracting investments to launch a powerful production facility immediately.

With the scale of operations determined, the next step is to find a suitable location. For a small-scale production, a garage or a small space where you can install a few machines will suffice. For larger operations, a workshop or warehouse will be necessary. Try to choose real estate in a location optimal for raw material delivery and finished product distribution.

After securing a location, begin selecting equipment. It's best to enter the fastener production business by starting with the simplest product - nails. But before proceeding, let's first explore the production process.

The raw material for nails is steel wire sold in coils weighing between 700 to 1300 kg each. Hence, you will need a hoist or winch to lift or move the raw material and finished products.

To feed wire into the nail machine, it needs to be straightened, requiring a specific machine. The process of turning wire into nails involves cutting it to a predetermined length, where the angled cut becomes the nail's point. A strike is applied to the back end to form the head.

When selecting the wire-nail machine, pay attention to the following parameters:

  • Wire rod diameter;
  • Length of nail pieces;
  • Production rate per minute;
  • Power consumption;
  • Machine weight;

When purchasing the machine, decide how quickly you want to recoup the production investment. High-quality and functional machines allow you to produce competitive products. However, they come with a significant cost. In this market, only companies offering the lowest wholesale nail prices survive. Consequently, the cheaper your equipment, the quicker you will reach breakeven.

It's challenging to provide prices for equipment and raw materials due to the constantly fluctuating currency exchange rates. The figures may mislead you in a month's time.

The final stage of implementing this business idea is hiring staff. For a small workshop (such as a garage with basic equipment), you will need two employees. It's preferable to hire workers with relevant qualifications, although the production operations are not overly complex, and virtually anyone can be trained to handle them.

Market Placement

Having covered how to manufacture nails, let’s discuss where and how to sell them. There are two methods of selling nails: in bulk by weight or packaged. To sell in bulk, you need to connect with wholesale traders, such as construction material markets or large building supply hypermarkets. It's also a good idea to open your retail outlet to sell your products. Packaged nails are in demand at smaller hardware stores with lower turnovers - to sell adequately packaged products, you will need to attract numerous clients. Ideally, consider combining both methods of product distribution, but this will require additional packaging equipment.

To ensure your enterprise breaks even within a year, you will need to produce and sell at least 4-4.5 tons of nails per month.

Expanding Production

Once you grasp the nuances of manufacturing and selling nails, you can start expanding production: acquiring more advanced machines to manufacture other types of fasteners, gradually gaining control over the local market. Step by step, over the years, you can transform your small workshop into a full-fledged fastener manufacturing plant. Perhaps in the future, you may grow your modest workshop into a massive company, similar to how the Samsung corporation emerged from humble beginnings to operate internationally.
