In recent years, major industrial enterprises have often been accused of harming the environment. Perhaps that's why there is a growing trend in the emergence of business ideas where mass production is combined with environmental benefits on the planet. One such business idea is the manufacturing of building materials from waste products of other industries, simply put, from trash.

Let's take a look at one existing type of production of such construction materials – bricks and blocks made from secondary raw materials.

How to Use "Waste" for Brick Production

It's worth noting that all examples of brick and block production from industrial waste are at the startup level. However, these are highly promising projects, each of which has the potential to grow into a highly profitable business.

Here's why such a business has significant prospects:

  • Cheap raw materials. What other manufacturers consider waste to be disposed of, you can use as raw materials for your production. Offer waste disposal services to such businesses or municipal organizations and secure yourself inexpensive raw materials.
  • Winning tenders. If you need to participate in tenders to start your business, having an environmentally friendly production facility on your side will improve the ecological situation in the region and provide the market with affordable building materials.
  • Wide target audience. The building materials you produce will be in demand for low-rise construction, sewage systems, industrial facilities, etc. There will be a demand due to the affordable prices, which are 10-15% lower compared to traditional building materials.

There are significant opportunities ahead. Now, let's see how these are being implemented in practice.

Examples of Brick Production from Secondary Waste

Bricks from Boiler Ash

This technology was developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, proving successful and now being implemented in construction projects in the Indian city of Muzaffarnagar. It utilizes boiler ash (70%) along with clay and lime as raw materials. Previously, boiler ash was simply dumped into the ground. Now, it can be used to create comfortable housing.

Blocks from Construction Waste

Another example involves producing wall blocks rather than bricks. A production facility was established in Vladivostok, where a plant was set up to manufacture building materials from construction and industrial waste. These waste materials are shredded, pulverized into a homogeneous mass, and then formed into blocks for constructing buildings.

Paper Bricks

This final example is still in the development stage. It involves creating bricks from waste paper production and clay, forming a mass that is then fired in kilns. The technology was developed at Haena University, and according to their researchers, these bricks can be used to create reliable energy-efficient low-rise homes. However, these bricks have lower strength than traditional ones, requiring additional wall reinforcement solutions for the building.

The business idea of producing bricks from waste is an industry that requires research courage, technical ingenuity, and entrepreneurial vision. If you can successfully implement such a project, you can take a leading position in the emerging market. Alternatively, if you prefer a fully developed production of building materials, consider focusing on manufacturing aerated concrete blocks and other traditional wall materials.
