Located in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, Tau Island is quite remote from civilization. Its population of 600 people is entirely dependent on diesel fuel shipments delivered by boats. To meet the island's annual energy needs, over 400,000 liters of diesel fuel are required each year (over 1,000 liters per day). Seeking to free the island from energy dependence, Tesla and SolarCity have embarked on a project to transition it to alternative energy sources.

The Project's Essence

According to the vision of the renowned companies involved, all of Tau Island's energy demands can be fully met through solar power alone. To achieve this, 5,328 solar panels are being installed on the island along with a complex of 60 Tesla Power Bank storage units. In total, the solar panels have a capacity of about 1.4 MW, more than enough to power the small island. In times of sunlight absence, the settlers will be supplied with energy stored in the Power Banks. The entire complex of 60 storage units charges in less than 7 hours and holds enough power to sustain the island for over 3 days.

Benefits

Therefore, with the help of Tesla and SolarCity's solar panels, Tau Island can save up to 400,000 liters of diesel fuel annually (without considering transportation costs). This, in turn, will quickly offset the investments made in constructing the power station. Additionally, such a project will serve as a showcase, vividly demonstrating how it is possible to completely transition away from depletable heat sources and seamlessly replace them with alternative, sustainable, and environmentally friendly resources.
