Ten years ago, science fiction writers loved to terrify the public with tales of energy crises and impending apocalypses. They weren't too far from the truth – most resources are indeed limited, except for the abundant energy from the sun and wind. Solar-powered homes are no longer a novelty. From eco-friendly cars like the European brand Volkswagen to the Solar Impulse 2 aircraft, powered solely by solar panels, the future is bright for renewable energy.

Solar Impulse 2: A Game-Changer

In 2015, Solar Impulse 2 took flight, embarking on a journey around the world from Abu Dhabi. With an average speed of 150 km/h, the aircraft has visited Oman, Myanmar, China, Japan, and crossed the Pacific Ocean.

Piloted by Bertrand Piccard, Solar Impulse 2 is not a drone. Piccard marvels at the aircraft's performance, especially flying over the ocean at about 16,000 meters altitude. He shared the mesmerizing view of the moon's reflection on the ocean surface and bid goodnight during a live broadcast on Solar Impulse 2's official website.

An Inspiring Mission

During discussions with UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, Piccard's enthusiasm for the aircraft was deemed "infectious." Ki-moon sees such planes as a stepping stone in aviation development, praising not only their technological advancement but also their environmental friendliness.

The global journey aims to showcase the benefits and challenges of solar-powered technology. After nearly 300 days of refining in a hangar in Hawaii, Solar Impulse 2 is now set to head to Northern California.
