Producing silk is a very ancient craft, an integral part of Eastern traditions. In ancient times, silk was more valuable than gold in China. Today, it remains a profitable business that can be organized on a large or small scale, catering to small deliveries. The initial capital doesn't have to be massive, as discussed in this article.
History
Silk production dates back over 5000 years to the court of the Chinese Emperor Huang Di. Legend has it that a silkworm cocoon fell into the Empress's tea cup and, upon contact with hot water, unraveled to release a fine thread. The Empress was so impressed with the delicate thread that she ordered many silkworm cocoons to be collected to create imperial garments.
Silkworm
From a scientific perspective, silk thread is the product of a silkworm's silk-secreting glands. While this insect is predominantly found in China, it also inhabits other regions of East Asia and the southern part of the Russian Primorsky Krai. Coarser silk is obtained from silkworms in India. Silk is also supplied by Uzbekistan, Brazil, Vietnam, Thailand, and Iran.
The silkworm's lifecycle includes the following stages:
- An adult silkworm lives for no more than 2 weeks and can lay over 500 eggs. Within 10-12 days, silkworm eggs hatch into silkworm larvae.
- After completing the molting stages and cocooning, the silkworm spins a cocoon containing silk thread up to 1000 meters long. This stage lasts about two weeks.
Silk Thread Characteristics
- Color: The color varies depending on the silkworm species. White silk is commonly used in production for ease of coloring the fabric as needed.
as shown here. - At the initial stage, silkworm eggs are placed in incubators maintained at a comfortable temperature of +23 to +25 degrees Celsius for their development into silkworms.
- Adult silkworms are then set in straw boxes to begin spinning cocoons. Each box must be well-ventilated as the cocoons solidify into threads upon exposure to air. Boxes are equipped with branches providing support for cocoon spinning, which takes approximately 4-5 days under favorable conditions (temperature, humidity).
- The retrieved threads are treated with silk glue to impart sheen and dyed to the desired colors.
When producing and selling silk, it's essential to convey to consumers that silk is not just beautiful, durable, and pleasant but also beneficial.
The impact of natural silk on humans:
- Prevents arthritis and rheumatism.
- Reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
- Has a positive effect on the skin, normalizing its balance and preventing skin diseases.
- Reflects ultraviolet rays.
- Possesses antibacterial properties.
Silkworm cocoons are successfully utilized in cosmetics as an exfoliating ingredient.
Silk has always been considered a luxurious, expensive fabric, historically reserved for the elite. The demand for this material remains high, making silk cultivation and production a profitable business. However, it's crucial to remember that this labor-intensive work requires significant time investment and thorough study before getting started.
