The agricultural niche remains largely unoccupied. This provides low competition and simplicity in starting a vegetable and livestock farming business. Cultivating agricultural crops seems quite promising, and we have previously explored the idea of growing fruits. However, why not consider getting into wheat cultivation?
When planning to start your own wheat-growing business, two factors need to be considered. Firstly, a significant portion of land suitable for agriculture falls under risky agricultural zones. Secondly, in order to profit from cultivating this somewhat demanding plant, it will be necessary to sow large areas. These particularities highlight the need for a meticulous approach to developing a business plan, including the technical and economic justification required for attracting investments or obtaining capital through credit.
Successful Farming: Why Choose Wheat?
Agricultural business involving wheat cultivation, with the right experience and agronomic knowledge, can bring significant benefits for several reasons.
- This cereal crop is highly demanded worldwide, used in the production of bakery and pasta products. With such high demand, competition is not a major concern, especially considering that the competition in this sector of the European economy is not very high due to the complexities of wheat cultivation.
- On average, sowing 1 hectare of land requires 150 kg of raw material. For 100 hectares, this amounts to 15 tons. With wheat seeds priced at $85 per 100 kg, the cost for sowing such an area would be $1,275. This amount is only required once, as seeds can be saved from the harvest of the previous year. With the right choice of land, adherence to cultivation techniques, and the use of modern equipment, wheat productivity per hectare can range from 15 to 55 tons. Considering that the price of wheat per ton reaches $175, the potential profitability of such a business becomes evident.
What Is Required for Wheat Cultivation?
Winter wheat varieties are more common. They offer higher yields, though in recent years, due to thin snow cover on fields in Europe, crop quality and yield have been affected.
A thoughtful approach to pre-wheat planting crops will also provide pest protection, reducing the need for pesticides. Organic fertilizers will also need to be purchased, requiring around $710 per 100-hectare plot.
To recoup expenses and turn a profit on a wheat farm, cultivating the grain on extensive fields is crucial. Like with corn cultivation, it makes sense to lease land for this purpose. Note that the lease duration cannot exceed 49 years, but eventually, the land can be bought under more favorable conditions.
Conditions for Growing Wheat
Winter varieties are frost-resistant. With adequate snow cover, the plants can withstand temperatures as low as -13°F. Wheat also exhibits heat tolerance; however, quality and yield decrease when temperatures rise above 95°F. Wheat does not require excessive watering, with the greatest moisture demand during the earing stage.
