There are basic human needs without which a person simply cannot physically exist. Food is one of them. That's why the food-related business will always be in demand and relevant. This is especially true for establishments with high service levels and food delivery services. After all, everyone wants to eat delicious and nutritious food, but not everyone has the time or desire to dine out. Only about 10% of all catering establishments offer food delivery. Therefore, setting up a delivery service can be a challenging but very profitable choice for businesses in any region.
Key Expenses Needed to Start:
1) Launching a Website
To provide customers access to your delivery service, you will need to create a sophisticated website with a personal account, online calculator, call-back service, unique design, full menu representation, and more. You can either hire a professional contracting company for website development (most expensive option), work with a freelance specialist (cheaper but less reliable), or do it yourself (if you have the necessary skills).
Another significant advantage would be developing your own mobile application. This will help increase the flow of customers who no longer need access to a computer to order food.
2) Advertising Expenses
At the start, you will need a minimum of two couriers. This will be sufficient to serve up to 5 people per hour. You will also need to purchase transportation. Scooters are ideal for year-round use in warmer regions, while compact cars are necessary in harsher climates (preferably with low fuel consumption).
In metropolitan areas, it is sometimes faster to deliver small orders using public transportation (subway, buses, etc.). However, it is not advisable to rely solely on this option. It is also crucial to purchase special equipment for communication with couriers, GPS trackers, mobile phones, and tablets to streamline communication among employees and expedite operations.
4) Office Setup
A specific amount of funds should be set aside for renting space, acquiring necessary equipment, and hiring at least one dispatcher to handle order intake and distribution among couriers.
5) CRM System
Installing a specialized geolocation program for optimizing dispatchers' and couriers' work will be a highly effective step. You can either purchase a license for a ready-made solution (cheaper but less convenient) or order custom CRM software tailored to your needs (more expensive but a one-time payment for long-term software designed specifically for you).
Where to Begin when Starting a Food Delivery Service?
The first and most crucial step is to establish partnership agreements with local restaurants, cafes, canteens, etc. This can be a simple agreement or a legally formalized contract. Statistics show that no more than 10% of all food establishments have their own delivery service. Therefore, finding potential partners willing to collaborate with you may not be as difficult as it seems.
There are two main ways for a food delivery service to interact with a restaurant:
1) Charging a fixed price for each delivery. This option is optimal for transporting food from inexpensive establishments or fast-food chains.
2) Offering free delivery to the customer, with the difference being paid by the partnering restaurant. In this case, the establishment saves significantly on rent, waitstaff salaries, and other expenses. The difference for the same dish can be around 20-25%, which goes to the delivery service.
Tips to Make Food Delivery Business Successful:
1) Expand Your Menu Selection
You can position yourself as a service specializing in delivering only sushi or pizza, or as a multifunctional delivery service for all types of food. To maximize profit, you will need to establish partnership agreements with at least 10-15 restaurants. The more partners, the better.
2) Calculate Optimal Delivery Times
Setting delivery times too short may result in late deliveries and customer dissatisfaction. Conversely, overly inflated timeframes will deter many potential customers. Calculate the ideal courier arrival time for various areas in your city (usually 1-2 hours). Don't forget to add preparation time at the restaurant to the delivery time.
3) Work with Establishments That Already Offer Delivery
In this scenario, you can simply showcase their products on your website or mobile app and earn a percentage for each order. The transportation and preparation services will be handled by the partnering restaurant.
4) Offer Additional Services at the Beginning
Many food delivery services also provide personal delivery of hygiene products, clothing, accessories, etc. This allows for additional income during slow periods. However, it's essential not to overdo it, or you may end up being asked to transport large items that cost more than transporting small food items.
Therefore, food delivery is a highly lucrative business that will always be relevant. With sufficient initial investment and effective organization, it can bring a good profit to its owner.
