ats: A Lucrative Crop in the Food Industry
Oats are more than just animal feed - they play a vital role in the food industry. While they are commonly used to feed horses and other farm animals, their primary application lies in food production. Interestingly, the demand for oats continues to grow steadily over time. They are used to make nutritious cereal breakfasts, flour for baking confectionery and bread, and even trendy products like oat milk.
Due to the high demand for oats, the business of selling them is lucrative and promising. In this article, we will discuss the key aspects to consider if you are venturing into oat cultivation.
Essential Considerations for Starting
Firstly, it is crucial to select the oat variety. The most popular one is Avéna satíva - a feed oat. It is low-maintenance, yields well, and enjoys consistent demand. However, its market value is not as high, so it may be worth exploring food-grade varieties. A smart approach would be to divide the field into sections and plant different oat varieties or even other crops (not necessarily grains) in rotation. This practice helps maintain soil fertility by preventing depletion.
When it comes to choosing land, it largely depends on your region's characteristics, initial capital, etc. Oats grow well in various soil types, with fertile black soil being the most preferable for maximum yields. If obtaining or leasing black soil is not feasible due to higher costs, other soil types can still support oat cultivation.
Prioritize lands that did not previously grow beets, as they share common pests with oats.
Winter oats tend to be more productive compared to spring oats. Spring oats, on the other hand, are less susceptible to weather-related risks since they do not need to survive the winter.
Oats are resilient to various soil types and can thrive in poor soil conditions as they efficiently absorb nutrients. Specific fertilizers are typically not required, but liming, potassium, and phosphorus additions can be beneficial, especially in high precipitation areas.
Estimated Profit Calculations
On average, seeding one hectare of land requires 150-170 kg of seeds. It is advisable to choose a larger field size for planting as oats take about four months to mature, and the entire process from seeding to harvest and sale spans approximately six months. For effective crop rotation, aiming for a field of at least 100 hectares is ideal.
To seed 100 hectares with a total seed requirement of 15-17 tons, assuming a seed cost of $150 per ton, the total seed purchase cost amounts to $2300. In addition, annual land lease expenses at $50 per hectare (current rate for black soil) sum up to $5000.
Fertilizer costs vary based on soil quality and regional climate conditions. However, overall, fertilizer expenses are relatively low for oats compared to other crops.
Lastly, equipment rental costs, such as combine harvesters at $8 per hour, should be considered. Investing in your machinery could be a more economical choice for a long-term farming operation, allowing for machinery rental income and potential labor costs when hiring local workers.
A 100-hectare field, under proper management, can yield approximately 200 tons. With an average price of $80 per ton, the potential earnings in one season could reach $16,000. While initial profits may not cover all expenses in the first year, sustainable profits are expected within 2-3 seasons.
